Marshall "Butch" DeSmet II passed away Monday, December 16, 2024 at 61 years old. Loving husband to Suzy. Beloved father to his two children Matthew DeSmet and Christopher (Kristine) DeSmet. Wonderful grandfather to his nine grandchildren Claire, Everett, Waylon, Josephine, Benjamin, Annalyn, Michael, Ignazio and Domenico. Dear brother to Ann Marie (Gary) Fox and uncle to Gary Michael Fox and Michelle (Larry) Kelley.
Marshall was born to the late Marshall Sr. and Margaret DeSmet on March 28, 1963. He lived in Detroit and attended De La Salle High School (graduated 1981). During his high school years Marshall played hockey, track and field, and baseball. He worked at Detroit Public Schools for 30 years as a Chief Engineer for the Power House. After retirement Marshall enjoyed spending time at Pointe Aux Barques RV Park in Port Hope. Suzy and Marshall got married at the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse in 2014 surrounded by family and friends. Suzy and Marshall also enjoyed spending time in Au Gres boating and relaxing. That is the place where Marshall was happiest between hospital stays and doctor appointments. It became a nice retreat for Marshall, Suzy and Brittany Ann to get away to. This home helped keep Marshall's spirits alive.
Marshall continued the family history of volunteering in the food pantry at Saint Mary Queen of Creation Catholic Church in New Baltimore for six years after he retired. The Belgian American Association was a big part of his life. Marshall served on the board for many years. He has been their president for the last two years and enjoyed spending time with his Brother Members.
Visitation for Marshall will be held at Van Lerberghe Funeral Home at 30600 Harper in St. Clair Shores on Friday, December 20th from 3-8 pm. St. Margaret of Scotland at 21201 East Thirteen Mile Rd in St. Clair Shores will conduct a mass to honor Marshall's life on Saturday, December 21st with his In-state beginning at 9:00 and Mass at 10:00.
