Martha Jane Keys Shanks,91, of Lenoir, NC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 1, 2026, at Wellmore Assisted Living in Tega Cay, SC.

Martha was born on November 18th, 1934, in Limestone, TN to Mary and Frank Keys. She worked for many years as a secretary for Lenoir Presbyterian Church before retiring, and she also served as a deacon there. She was known for her gift of hospitality and tutoring at an elementary school.

Martha was a shining light in the lives of all who were privileged to know her. Her journey on earth was one marked by love, compassion and unwavering faith in God. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, hiking and being a grandmother. Her kindness and gentleness are what made her special.

Martha was predeceased by her husband, John E Shanks, brother Elbert Keys, sister Barbara Walker and great grandson, Max Shanks. She is survived by brother and sister-in- law, James and Joyce Keys of Limestone, TN, sons and daughters-in-law, John R. Shanks and Deb Shanks, of Lenoir, Rick Shanks and Betsy Shanks of Charlotte, NC, Ken Shanks and Christine Aubrespy Shanks of Cornelius, NC and Marseille, France. She leaves behind beloved grandchildren, Joshua Shanks, Craig Shanks and wife, Daniela Vellotti, Eric Shanks and wife Amanda, Corey Shanks and wife Jessica, Margaux Shanks and Eliott Shanks, great-grandchildren Julietta Stanchiu and husband, Andre, Harrison Shanks, Abigail Wilkie and husband Jacob, Giuliano Shanks, Taylor Shanks, Griffin Shanks along with great great grandson, Alessio Stancui and many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held on February 18th at 11AM at Lenoir Presbyterian Church,1002 Kirkwood St NW with Rev. Gerrit Dawson of Baton Rouge and Rev. Eric Bartel presiding.

Palmetto Funeral Group of Fort Mill, SC is handling the arrangements.

If desired, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lenoir Presbyterian Church Youth Ministries or habitat, 1216 Harper Ave, both in Lenoir NC 28645.
