Martha Francis Slaughter (87) passed away in peace on the evening of July 2, 2024, in the company of her family.
Born October 23, 1936 as the oldest of twelve, Martha spent the bulk of her early years in Eastern Washington, living on her family farm. She moved to Spokane, WA following her high-school graduation in Deer Park, WA (1955). Here, she would meet John Albert Slaughter while attending a church dance. The two became inseparable, sharing fifty-five years of matrimony while raising their five children. Their lives continued to flourish in many cities– from Clarkston, WA to Kellogg, ID then Pullman, WA. Martha and John settled down in
Ogden, UT after moving to Harrisville, UT in 1991.
Throughout, Martha remained a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. She involved herself in the heart of her community, serving as PTA president while working with youth in both church settings and the Kellogg YMCA. She held many callings in her church, and rejoiced in the love and support of friends and family. When those close to her needed compassion and care, Martha would provide. Her loving soul felt motivated by family. She loved to nurture– even caring for her own Grandmother during her last few years of life. Martha and John were called to serve an LDS mission in Nebraska from 2006-2007. She always approached the world with compassion and understanding.
We will remember Martha for her warmth, kindness and authenticity. She loved frogs, decorating her surroundings with frog statuettes and ceramics of every shape and size. Her manicured garden left an impression on all. Especially her favorites- roses- of which she would craft delicate arrangements for her church ward for many years. Oftentimes she joined her family for road trips and camping around the U.S.. Martha was always adventurous and eager to create memories with children and grandchildren alike.
She is preceded in death by her parents (Arthur and Emma Jeannette Gering), brother (Kenneth Gering, Milton Gering), and husband (John Albert Slaughter). She is survived by her five children and their spouses (John/Nina Slaughter, Asenath/Sam Busch, Annette/Brian Syms, Joseph Slaughter, David/Carolynn Slaughter), nine of her siblings (Louise B. Bernhardt, Marie A. GerhartMelba Jean Speers, Carline Miller, LeMar A. Gering, Melbert D. Gering, Lee P. Gering, David Gering, Norman M. Gering), eighteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She loved with her entire being, and will be missed by all.
Martha's memorial service will be held in spring of 2025. A small service will be held for her immediate family on July 6, 2024.
The family would like to thank Jodee Harris for her kind friendship and love for Martha. They would also like to thank Taylor and Sydney of Intermountain Hospice Care for their kindness throughout a difficult time. They cared for and ensured Martha was comfortable throughout her final moments.
