It is with a loving heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Martha Sue Smith who passed away on Saturday, August 30th at the age of 87.
Throughout her life, Sue held an unwavering Catholic faith, found strength and joy in prayer, and lived a life devoted to serving the Lord. Born in Luke, Maryland on July 19, 1938, she was the daughter of Roland and Veronica (Cosgrove) Nofsinger. Sue was known for her generosity and kindness, a caregiver, always giving to her family and friends including strangers, putting others' needs before her own. Her tireless dedication to helping others left a profound and lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Sue was the devoted wife of Glenn Smith for almost 67 cherished years, building a strong foundation of love and support for their family. Sue and Glenn met at a dance with their first date seeing Queen Elizabeth at University of Maryland. Their love began on Thanksgiving Day and every day since they have given their hearts and souls to each other and their children. For the first decade of their marriage, Sue devoted herself to supporting Glenn's coaching sports and playing basketball. She was Glenn's and his team's number one fan in the bleachers dressed in her classy outfits and high heel shoes. In those early years, they traveled together to Keewayden Camp Vermont, Canada, Hickory Hollow Camp, and Atlantic City. Of all the chapters of Sue's life, the one she cherished most, was her children, Michael and Alice. Every ounce of her love, energy and spirit was poured into raising, caring and supporting not only her children but their growing families. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family at her home, church mass, adoration, family dinners, holidays, reunions, bridge club, marriage encounter, shopping, sporting events, celebrations and parties.
Sue graduated from Bruce High School and went on to further her education at Catherman's Business School. Her early career began as an executive secretary at Mack Truck, Fairchild and CertainTeed. In the 1970s, Sue entered the world of real estate with Maryland General Realty and Pat Paddock Realty. Her passion for helping others find their perfect homes and businesses led her to a new chapter in the late 1980s when she purchased Blickenstaff Realty. As the owner and broker, she proudly served her community for decades building lasting relationships and a strong reputation in the real estate field. In the early 1990s, Sue and her husband, Glenn, embarked on a new journey when they purchased Bens Amusements. Together they worked side by side across Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Along the way, they shared countless memories and moments often enjoying blockbuster movies together during their amusement game collections.
Sue is survived by her loving husband, Glenn; her adored son, Michael Smith and wife Lisa; her cherished daughter, Alice Smith Hughes and husband Dan; her beloved grandchildren, Michael Smith, Ivan Swauger & partner Tiffany, Amanda Swauger, Racheal Cottrill & partner Michael, Hannah Smith & husband Darquel, and Ryan Hughes; her precious great grandchildren, Amaure, Malea, Tyree, Ladainian, J'Nyah, Cianya, Donte, Arielle, Isaiah, Kalani, Adonis, Ian, Elias, Makai, Zola, and Mateo; her treasured sisters and brother, Anne Spriggs, Mary Jo Torbett, Jean (Harry) Burton, and Harold Dean Nofsinger and many nieces and nephews.
