Terryville Mr. Martin D. Capaldo, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 6, at the Waterbury Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Alice E. (Zappone) Capaldo.
Martin was born September 21, 1940, in Waterbury, son of the late Richard L. and Felicia Marie (Cocchiola) Capaldo. Marty graduated from Leavenworth High School in Waterbury. He then joined the Army Reserves foe three years and then enlisted for four years. During that time, he was deployed to Thailand where he was with the 25th Infantry Division. After serving he returned to Waterbury and married Alice.
He worked for CL&P for almost twenty years as a meter reader and heavy equipment operator. He also owned a few restaurants, the Hayloft in New Milford, Capaldos Pizza in Ruskin, FL and Anthonys Pizza in Thomaston. Marty loved to travel back and forth from Florida in their Motor Home which they did for about twenty years. He loved boating, classic cars, Harleys and his dogs, Katie, Harley, Bailey and Jake. But probably his favorite of all was helping anyone who needed help, especially if it required a heavy machine operator.
In addition to his wife, Martin is survived by three sons, Martin T. Capaldo and his wife Sharon of Thomaston, Anthony J. Capaldo and his wife Mila of Wolcott and Joseph B. Capaldo and his wife Sherri of Southbury; his brother, Thomas F. Capaldo of Southington; his sister, Carolyn Gatzuras and her husband Jeff of Terryville; his life-long friend, Anthony (Itch) Sarandrea; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Katie. He had a special place in his heart for Cathy and Jim Register.
