Martin D Mannix

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Martin D. Mannix Jr., affectionately known as "Marty," on March 11, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Washington D.C, on November 7, 1941, to Martin D. Mannix and Gertrude "Trudy" (Kennedy) Mannix. Marty spent most of his youth on South Catherine Street surrounded by a large and loving family. He was a cherished brother to Tom, Patricia, Tim, Mike, Katie, and Molly.
Marty's educational journey began and flourished at St. John's Academy, where he completed both his elementary and high school education. He furthered his education by attending college at SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating in 1964. It was during his college years that Marty discovered his passion for governance, serving as the first president of the Student Association. He stayed committed to SUNY Plattsburgh throughout the years and was eventually appointed to the SUNY Plattsburgh College Foundation and Board of Trustees.
Marty was united in marriage to Margaret E. (Touse) Mannix in 1963, and together they shared 47 years of marriage, during which they welcomed three children: Theresa, Kathi, and Daniel Mannix, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, dozens of cousins and a healthy stable of friends to enjoy. Marty later found love again and married Alice Church, enjoying eight wonderful years together. Marty was welcomed into Alice's family by Kathy and Allen Fessette and Tom and Elizabeth Church. He relished taking an active role with Alice's, or now his, grandchildren Ryan, Kent, and Devin Fessette and Hunter and John Casey Church.
Marty's commitment to his community was unparalleled. He was deeply inspired by JFK's call to service at the inauguration, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." He dedicated a remarkable 35 years of service as a member of the Town of Plattsburgh Town Board, Deputy Supervisor and Town Justice. His leadership extended to his role at the Clinton County Democratic Party as a delegate to the 1972 national convention and as Chair of the Democratic Party of Clinton County for eight years. Marty's community service also included but is not limited to his decades of participation as a member of the Plattsburgh Lions Club, Plattsburgh Rotary Club, Plattsburgh Kiwanis Club, and school board member for St. John's Academy. His commitment to helping others reached international shores, particularly through his charitable work in Nicaragua with the Mission of Hope.
Beyond his political and community engagements, Marty had a successful 36-year career with Northern Insuring Agency, Inc., retiring as vice president in July 2004.
Marty will be remembered for his generous spirit, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was also an avid runner and golfer, completing multiple marathons and winning numerous golf tournaments. Later he enjoyed his Bridge Club. He enjoyed keeping score for his son Dan's varsity basketball teams. He also enjoyed sharing his love for golf with his granddaughter Katelynn Mannix who later had immense success in both high school and college at the Division I level. His legacy of service and love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Marty is survived by his three children and six grandchildren Stephen, Marti, Katelynn, Brady, Michael and Paxton, step-grandchildren Kent, Devin, Ryan, Hunter and John Casey, two great-granddaughters and his siblings Tom, Patricia, Tim, and Molly, and a community that he cherished. He was predeceased by his parents and his two wives, Margaret E. Mannix and Alice Church, sister Katie and brother Michael.
Visitation will be Friday, April 19, 2024 from 3:30-6:30pm, and Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 9:00-10:30am at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A memorial service will follow in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel.
A celebration of Marty's legacy will be held on April 20, 2024, at his son's home beginning at 1:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marty's memory can be made to Hannah's Hope or the Mission of Hope, two causes close to his heart.
Marty's journey through life was a beacon of hope, service, and love. As we say goodbye, we also say thank you - for the laughter, the lessons, and the legacy he left behind. Rest in peace, Marty. Your memory will forever be a treasure in our hearts
