CUMMINS, Marvelea Armstrong, Columbus OH, passed from this Earthly realm and was peacefully welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on December 1, 2022.
Born May 6, 1040, Marvelea grew up on the Armstrong family farm on Moore Road in Union Furnace, OH and was raised by her parents Senator Harry and Madaline (Kitchen) Armstrong,
Along with her three younger sisters Karen, Maureen, and Diane. As a child she enjoyed spending time with her grandparents Leo and Nellie (Wyskiver) Armstrong. Her relationship and love for the Lord was cultivated in her childhood by her Grandpa and Grandma Armstrong. She loved spending Saturday nights with them, then attending church on Sundays. During one of those visits, Marvelea accepted Jesus and began a lifelong relationship with the Lord. She would often recall her talks and prayers she had with the Lord as a child.
Marvelea excelled in school and particularly loved band where she played the baritone. Her love of music was evident in her life, as she loved listening to music and singing. She constantly sang praise songs unto the Lord, (especially while in the car!) Marvelea attended Ohio University in Athens, OH and graduated from Word of Life Bible School. As a youngster, she wanted to become a nurse so she could comfort and care for people. She did not become a nurse through schooling; however, in a way, she did provide a spiritual hospital for God's people, ministering to anyone she met. Marvelea's life was one of service to others – she was an annual volunteer with the American Cancer Society for many years as well as a prayer line volunteer at the former WCVO Christian radio station. Her WCVO volunteerism would change her life as this was how she met her third daughter Renee Thompson. Marvelea was a band chaperone while her grandson David was in high school, a church camp counselor when her own children were grown, and the leader of home Bible studies for many years.
In the 1980's, Marvelea's relationship and faith continued to grow in the Lord. She was always busy with His business whether it was with women's groups, work and volunteer aspects at church or ministering to anyone she encountered. A prayer warrior, she spent countless hours praying and interceding for people, many of whom would call or show up on her doorstep all hours of the day and night. She never turned anyone away and was always available to spread God's love.
Marvelea especially loved young people. She taught Sunday school, was a youth leader, and loved ministering to young people whenever they needed someone. Many of her children's friends quickly became part of "the family" over the years. She became associated with Teen Challenge, a ministry for women who were former drug addicts, prostitutes, or had been incarcerated. Marvelea and her family took in two of these young women from Teen Challenge to live with them. Over the years, her family also took in several young adults for short periods of time.
Marvelea's main priority was to raise her children to love God with all their hearts, so they would know the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him of their own. She shared the Bible with them, prayed with & for them, and taught them about God's love, His faithfulness, forgiveness, acceptance, and the need to trust him in all things. She also showed by example the blessings that can come by using their gifts and talents to serve others whether through church ministry or their own sphere of influence where God placed each of them. Marvelea's spiritual legacy lives on in another generation through the grandchildren that she adored. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart and did anything she could for them and especially loved to shop for them! Marvelea enjoyed spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren and was always thrilled when they would spend the night at her house, or when she would spend some individual time with each one.
