Mary Holstein Appelt, 94, of Appleton, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 13, 1930, to Ernst and Bertha (Graf) Holstein.
On February 16, 1952, she married James Appelt in Oak Park, Illinois, and they enjoyed sixty-three years of marriage together. The couple was blessed with four children, all sons. They raised the boys in River Forest, Illinois, and then lived thirty years as residents of Door County, Wisconsin. Later, they moved to Appleton, Wisconsin.
Mary enjoyed knitting, reading, doing puzzles, was very involved with her church, and volunteered with the Miller Arts Center in Sturgeon Bay. For thirty years, she worked with the cradle roll ministry of her church in Algoma, which focused on outreach to young families when a new child was born.
Mary is survived by her three sons, Paul (Katherine), David, and Thomas (Gemma); her three grandchildren, Rachel Hansell, Matthew, and Elizabeth; and one great grandchild, Caroline.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 2015, her son, Dan, her brother, Herman, and her parents.
The Christian Funeral Service for Mary will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 16, 2024, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church (HWY. 47 in the town of Center). Rev. Schoell and Rev. Gartner will officiate. Mary will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Monday from 9:00 am until the time of service.
