Mary Baker Obituary

Visit the Westford Funeral Home & Cremation Service website to view the full obituary.

Mary Louise Baker passed away on June 15, 2025. She was born in Spokane, WA to Raymond and Natalie (Favre) Kumbera, and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, where she was a proud cheerleader who loved ice skating and skiing at Mt. Spokane with her friends.

Mary cherished her high school years and often returned to Spokane for reunions, always eager to reconnect with old friends. She went on to earn her nursing degree from the University of Washington, where she met Gary Baker, her future husband, through her Alpha Phi sorority sister, Betty Baker. Mary and Gary were married on December 20, 1969.

Following Gary’s military service, the couple settled in Bellingham, where Mary began her nursing career at St. Luke’s Hospital. Over the years, she served the community in many ways: as a childbirth educator, nursing instructor at BTC, and for nearly two decades as the beloved school nurse for the Blaine School District.

In 1971, Mary and Gary moved to Lake Samish, where they built a vibrant life and raised their four children; Cary, Keith, Katie, and Christy. Their lakeside home became a gathering place, known for legendary beach parties and generous hospitality. Mary was a loving neighbor, often the first to bring a meal, lend a hand, or offer nursing care to those in need. She had a true heart of service.

Mary and Gary shared a passion for sailing, racing Hobie Cats and winning the Ski to Sea race in 1987 as the first-ever team from Whatcom County to take the title. Summers were often spent sailing through the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, and Desolation Sound.

Mary had a lifelong love of dachshunds, all affectionately named after treats; Cookie, Pretzel, Brownie, Tootsie, and Coco. She was also known as the mom who welcomed everyone, often saying, “There is always room for one more.” Her warmth and generosity created a home full of love, laughter, and good food.

Mary is survived by her children, Cary (Jack) Curnow, Keith (Angie) Baker, Katie Baker, and Christy (Tim) Chapman; her former husband, Gary Baker; and nine grandchildren, George, Charles, Grayson, Madeline, Reese, Channing, Laney, Tyce, and Camryn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Natalie Kumbera.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 19th.

In lieu of flowers, honor Mary by inviting an elderly neighbor to dinner or lending a hand to a young mother - just as she so often did.
