Sister Mary Kiernan, CIJ was born in County Leitram, Ireland to James and Margaret Kiernan. She had 3 brothers and 3 Sisters. During World War II, Mary worked in a munitions factory in England before leaving for America under the sponsorship of her uncle Michael McHugh. Sister Mary Kiernan entered the religious community of the Congregation of the Infant Jesus Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, Inc. in 1955, because she had witnessed their mission in Brooklyn, caring for the sick poor in their homes. Sister trained to be a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers and thus began her nursing career. Sister nursed the sick poor in their homes from 1959 to 1990, in Long Island City, West Islip LI, East Meadow LI and Rockville Centre LI. Sister served her religious community in the roles of House Manager and sacristan for St. Joseph's Villa. Sister often shared her extraordinary culinary skills for the benefit of others for holidays and special occasions. Sister was known for her kind, generous spirit and deep faith in the God who called her to serve. She shared this faith and giving spirit lavishly with her patients, their families and the resident priests and chaplains at the Villa over the years. Sister is survived by Nieces and Nephews, Grand nieces and nephews and loving cousins, here and in Ireland. The Sisters of Villa St. Joseph Community mourn her loss. The wake will be on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 2 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. - the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10:30 A.M.- All ceremonies will be at Villa St. Joseph, 984 North Village Ave. Rockville Centre, NY 11570. In lieu of flowers donations to the Charitable Trust of the Congregation of the infant Jesus Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, Inc. at Villa St. Joseph would be most welcome.
