Mary Bannasch Crookes, born on December 11, 1963, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away on March 18, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 61. Her life was a testament to joy, kindness, and the simple pleasures that brought her happiness.
Mary's educational journey took her to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree and began to shape her path toward a life filled with meaningful contributions and relationships.
Mary spent part of her professional career as an Event Coordinator with Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). Her enthusiasm and dedication made a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues, reflecting her ability to create inclusive and memorable experiences for all. She cultivated a vibrant community wherever she went, leaving a legacy of connection and warmth.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mary cherished nature and the serene beauty of the beach, which was truly her happy place. She found joy in fishing and sailing, adventures that fueled her spirit. Her love for dogs and children was evident to all who knew her-both seemed naturally drawn to her nurturing presence.
Preceded in death by her parents, John Bannasch and Connie Oleson, Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Dave Crookes, whose unwavering support and love were a cornerstone of her happiness. She leaves behind her cherished sisters: Cindy Laing (Keith) and their daughter Hannah, Pam Kastl (Bob) and their children John and Katherine, and Sandy Chlebowski (Jeff) and their children Courtney and Kyle. Her extended family and many friends will forever hold her memory dear.
A Celebration of Life is planned to be held at a later time. Details will be updated here when they are available.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in honor of Mary to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Services of Wilmington. This organization provides palliative and end-of-life care to those in need and supports their families, offering the same compassion and care they provided to Mary and her loved ones during her time there.
Mary touched many lives, both personally and professionally. Her spirit will sail on through the lives she enriched and the memories she created, remaining a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to know her.
