MARY PATRICIA OWENS DETERS - LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, FRIEND AND NURSE
Mary Pat Deters was a true caregiver who was well loved by her family, friends and patients.
Mary Patricia Owens Deters was born on October 22nd, 1941, and passed away on Monday September 29th, 2025 at the age of 83. Mary Pat was born in Flint, MI, the oldest of seven children of Bernard and Catherine Owens. At age thirteen, she essentially became a mother, helping raise her six siblings when their father was tragically killed in a car accident. She attended St Michael's grammar school and high school in Flint and Borgess School of Nursing at Nazareth College Kalamazoo. In March, 1964 fate introduced her to John Deters at a mutual friend's wedding; they married the following November. Together, they raised five children and were blessed with twelve grandchildren. As a testament to how important family was to her, Mary Pat traveled to Boston for the wedding of her grandson only 16 days before her death.
Mary Pat was a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit nurse who cared for the tiniest of humans and their parents for decades at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. She was an avid supporter of the Mother and Unborn Baby Care in Southfield, where she was known affectionately as "Aunt Pat" thanks to her many donations of home-sewn blankets, bibs and burp cloths for mothers in need. She enjoyed winning at Scrabble, Euchre, Gin Rummy, Bingo, and Slot Machines. Her greatest legacy, and for which she will be fondly remembered by all who received one, was her gift of personalized, hand-knitted Christmas stockings to hundreds of family members and friends.
After dedicating her life to caring for others, Mary Pat was well cared for by Katie and Alice at Custom Hospice and by the lovely ladies of Rushmore Manor the final three months of her life, for which the family is truly grateful.
Mary Pat is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John, her children, Paul (MaryAnn) Deters, Laura (Jeffrey) Zawacki, Colleen (John) Gilroy, Mike Deters and Kevin Deters as well 12 grandchildren Jack, Matt, and Ryan Deters, Dan (Anne Marie), Kate, Joe and Sarah Zawacki, Jack, Quinn, Hugh, Ned, and Walt Gilroy, her siblings Michael (Suzy) Owens, Dennis (Theresa) Owens and Margaret VanOver.
She will be remembered and missed by many. May her Irish Eyes perpetually smile upon each of us.
This obituary will be updated with the funeral arrangements in November.
Visitation and Mass will be held at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills.
