Mary Eppes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory - Northern Suffolk Chapel on Feb. 27, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Nell Berry Eppes, 83, of Virginia Beach, on Friday, February 21, 2025.
After a 40-year battle with multiple sclerosis-a battle she faced with grace, dignity, and courage-Mary Nell succumbed to one of its many complications. She passed peacefully and painlessly at home, surrounded by her children. Throughout her struggle, she never complained or questioned her fate. Her unwavering faith sustained her spirit, and she never lost sight of the promise of Heaven. Mary Nell embraced life to the fullest, cherishing every moment, especially those spent with her grandchildren, and always wore a smile.
Born on July 23, 1941, in Scott County, Virginia, Mary Nell attended Rye Cove High School and Radford University. In September 1961, she married the love of her life, Casper Eugene "Gene" Eppes, and they soon moved to Hampton Roads. Together, they built a wonderful life, residing primarily in Suffolk and Lake Gaston, NC.
Over the years, Mary Nell worked in the guidance counseling office at Manor High School and served as a civilian employee for the Department of Defense. She delighted in cross-stitching and creating ceramics for family and friends. When multiple sclerosis eventually limited her ability to engage in these cherished hobbies, she found solace in listening to audiobooks, reading the Bible, and spending time with her loved ones. A steadfast pillar of love and support for our family, she always offered encouragement and inspiration. Above all, she loved her family profoundly, and she will be greatly missed.
Mary Nell was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene, on December 25, 2024. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Ohmsen (Scott) and Beth Dubinsky (David); her grandchildren, Casey Ohmsen (Jeni), Rachel Braun, and Nick Braun; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
A celebration of Mary Nell's life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at R.W. Baker Funeral Home Bennetts Creek Chapel, with lunch to follow. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory North Suffolk Chapel is serving the family.
And God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain, for the former things have passed away.
