Mary Garrett, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on the morning of October 6, 2025, at her home in Charlestown, Indiana. She was 89 years old.
Born December 17, 1935, in Joliet, Illinois, Mary spent the majority of her life in Clark County, where her presence left a lasting mark on the community and in the hearts of all who knew her. A proud 1955 graduate of New Washington High School, Mary went on to build a fulfilling life with her husband Louis, rooted in hard work, family and faith.
Mary spent 30+ years of her life in retail and management at Woolworth’s in the Youngstown Shopping Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Many people still fondly remember her from her time there — her outgoing, outspoken personality and honest nature made her a local fixture at that time and a favorite among customers and coworkers alike.
After retiring in 1980, Mary spent her time making and painting ceramics in her home shop in Marysville, Indiana. She also gave generously of her time, volunteering for several years to help maintain and book community events at the Marysville Schoolhouse. A devoted Catholic, she was a long-time member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Charlestown, where she also volunteered during their annual Septemberfest, usually cooking dumplings along with her husband, Louis, and sister, Emma.
Mary was the matriarch of her family and was affectionately known to her grandchildren and many others as “Nanny.” She was very supportive of her grandchildren’s sporting events and milestones, always there to cheer them on with pride. Her presence was constant, her love unconditional.
She was preceded in death by her loving and kind husband, Louis Garrett; her parents, Francis and Iola Lindenmayer; her sisters, Emma Yount and Carolyn Holder; and her brothers, David Lindenmayer and Francis J. Lindenmayer II.
Mary is survived by her only child, daughter Kim (David) Daniel; her brother Robert (Wanda) Lindenmayer; and her beloved grandchildren: Clay (Kailey) Daniel, Aaron (Taylor) Daniel, Eli (Emily) Daniel, and Jenna (Alec) Graham. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Weston, Austyn, Lincoln, and Olivia Daniel — and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Baby Girl Graham, due very soon.
Mary Garrett was deeply loved and treasured. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, faith, and love for her family and friends. She will be missed beyond measure — but the memories and values she instilled in her family, will live for generations to come.
Memorial services to be determined at a later date.
