Sister Mary John Harvey

Sister Mary John Harvey 98, a member of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis died at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025.
She was born on Oct. 12, 1926, in Bloomington, IL to John William and Mary Mizak Harvey.
Sister Mary John attended Illinois State University and received a M.S. in Guidance & Counseling, She received a B.S. in Pharmacy at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb, and received a M.S. in Philosophy at Catholic University in Washington D.C.
She entered the convent on Sept. 24, 1945, at St. Francis Convent in Peoria, IL and professed her First Profession on June 22, 1948.
During her 80 yrs. in Religious Life, Sister Mary John served as a Pharmacist at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL for 6 yrs. She was an Instructor in Philosophy and Religion and served as Novice Mistress, for the Community. Sister served as a Member of Board of Managers & Vice-President of the Board of Managers of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis & during this time was Interim Administrator at: St. Francis Hospital, Escanaba, MI, St. Mary's Hospital, Galesburg, IL and St. James Hospital in Pontiac, IL. For many years, she served as Formation Director at Mt. Alverno Novitiate, E. Peoria & at the House of Formation in Peoria. Sister served 18 years. as a Member of the Governing Board of the Sisters of the Third Order. Sister was elected Major Superior of the Religious Congregation for 12 yrs. For a number of years, she also served as a Board of Director of OSF Healthcare System. On September 1, 2013, Sister Mary John was missioned to our Apostolate of Prayer & Suffering on behalf of our Religious Community, the Church and the World. She also supported those in the Formation Program and prayed and sacrificed for Vocations to our Community
In 2008, Sister Mary John was inducted into the University High School Pioneer Hall of Fame, Normal, IL. She was recognized for her life of devoted service and leadership within The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis.
Visitation at 7 P.M. on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the Motherhouse
Funeral Mass will be at 10 A.M. on Tuesday August 26, 2025, at the Motherhouse, E. Peoria, IL.
Burial will be in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery at the Motherhouse.
