Seneca, SC – Mary Elaine Lanford Barnett, age 90, wife of Dr. Alton Joseph Barnett, passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, September 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born September 16, 1935, in Woodruff, South Carolina, Elaine was the daughter of the late Lamar and Mary Campbell Lanford. A lifelong learner and passionate educator, she graduated from Woodruff High School, earned her bachelor's degree from Furman University, and later received her master's degree from Clemson University. She devoted her career to the Oconee County School District as both a teacher and a school psychologist, where her dedication shaped countless young lives. Elaine was a faithful and very active member of Walhalla Presbyterian Church, where her presence and service were deeply valued by her church family.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Alton Joseph Barnett of 68 years, and their children: Al Barnett (Andrea) of
Westminster, SC; Bonnie Douberley (the late Bruce) of Walhalla, SC; Dr. Cynthia Nichols of Chapin, SC; and Dr. Dianne Steinbeck (Larry) of Canton, GA. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Trey Barnett (Cricket), Walt Barnett (Dr. Merry Ellen), Amber Hege, Dr. Nicole Workman (John), Dr. Nick Nichols (Shannon), Alli Woody (Eric), and Asher Steinbeck (Meredith); and nineteen great grandchildren. She also leaves behind a cherished brother, Dr. Bobby Lanford (Nancy Harper Lanford) of Auburn, AL.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 3, 2025, at Walhalla Presbyterian Church, with a private entombment at Heritage Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at the church.
