Mary Jane Poling, 84, of Boone, Iowa, passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa, on Thursday, September 26, 2024. She was born on February 8, 1940, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Eva Irene Stevens and William Franklin Russell. Mary graduated from Boone High School in 1958. On July 6, 1958, she married Lesley "Bud" Poling at Mackey Methodist Church
In 1973, using her inheritance, she proudly completed nursing school as an LPN. Prior to becoming a nurse, Mary worked as a farmwife on a family farm. After almost 30 years of nursing, she retired and enjoyed part-time jobs at Hilton in Ames and the Boone Speedway. Mary was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. She enjoyed reading Danelle Steele, doing word searches, and gardening.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lesley "Bud" Poling in 1997; parents, Eva Irene and William Franklin Russell; in-laws, Verga and Alfred Poling; brother, John Russell; two brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Kathy Elsberry of Boone, IA; son, Chris (Stacey) Poling of Bondurant, IA; son, Marty Poling of Boone, IA; five grandchildren: Lesley Elsberry of Boone, IA, Wyatt (Amanda) Elsberry of Des Moines, IA, Tyler (Nicole) Poling of Bondurant, IA, Courtney (Tony) Jones of Mitchellville, IA, and Gage Poling of Ankeny, IA; four great-grandchildren: Xander Elsberry, Tessa Poling, Talon Jones, and Carson Jones; one brother, Joe Russell (Judy) Russell of Boone, IA; special friend, Ken Jacobs of Ames, IA, and many other family members and friends.
A visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. A private family burial will be held at Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
