Mary Denise Robb was a strong-willed, fiercely independent soul from her earliest days. Born on a cold and snowy night, perhaps she instinctively braced herself against the elements; but she always loved the warmth and softness of a handknit sweater and reveled in the joy and beauty that came with the wintery Christmas season.
Growing up in
Hudson, OH, and a connoisseur of sweets, she enjoyed bike-riding downtown for rocky road ice cream and penny candy, and hunting for the juiciest wild blackberries in the thorniest brambles. She combatted a rare form of brain cancer as a teen and bravely faced many health challenges during her life; however, she still excelled at her studies, graduating from Hudson High School in 1979, earning a master's degree in library science, and being a lifelong stickler for perfect grammar.
Before working as an archivist for the City of Akron's Planning Department, she was known for her top-notch customer service skills at Revco - she equally sought out great service at her favorite shops, always enjoying connecting with salespeople.
Mary Denise loved to travel and noticed beauty everywhere. She not only collected art, books and seashells, but meticulously created complex, delicate handwork projects, including needlepoint, lacemaking, calligraphy, glasswork, and Ukrainian egg-decorating. She had unwavering patience when it came to solving puzzles, untangling anything knotted, pulling weeds, and hunting for sharks' teeth at the beach. From an early age, she played the flute warmly and beautifully, even performing late in her life for residents at her assisted living home until health issues interfered. Through the years, despite her challenges, she never lost the ability to give a strong and loving hug.
