Mary Lorene Shine, 91, of Monticello, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, December 9, 2024.
She was born on January 22, 1933 in Fairfield, IL to the late Virgil and Kansas Mae (Brock) Meeks. She married Howard Shine on September 5, 1953 in Fairfield. He preceded her in death on June 9, 2000.
She attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield. She worked at the former Frosty Mug in Monticello where she started out as a carhop and worked her way up to a cook. She knew the secret root beer recipe which she never told. She later went to work at Hooks Drug Store, Chesebrough-Ponds and K-Mart as a cashier and greeter. She also worked at the Little Ceasers in the former K-Mart store.
She was a volunteer counselor when the Billy Graham Films came to Monticello. She was a supporter of the GOP and helped hand count the local votes. She was involved with the White County Telephone Contact, a former county crisis line.
Mary was the last charter member of the First Baptist Church in Monticello where she was a past president of the Ladies Missionary Society.,
Surviving are her children, Kathi J. (David) Jordan of Winamac and Karen L Murray of Monticello; sister, Lyndall Meeks of Fairfield, IL; grandchildren, Zachary Murray, Jill Murray (Rick Russo), Jamie D. Jordan, Jeremy L. Jordan, Jackie E. Jordan, and Jessica L Jordan; great grandchildren, Cameron, Chloe, Evan Austin, Avery, Dominic, and Priscilla.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy S. Shine; and siblings, Margie Brand, Daisey Watson and Norma Cameron
Visitation will be from 11 am until the time of services at 1 pm celebrating Mary's life on Monday, December 16, 2024 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. Rev. Benji Riddle of the Monticello Christian Church will officiate services.
Burial will follow at the Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to The Salvation Army or to Samaritan's Purse. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
