Mary was born on May 20, 1958, in Jefferson, WI to James and Mildred (Lenz) Connelly. Mary graduated from Jefferson High School in 1976 and earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Dietetics and Education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
On September 2, 1989, Mary was united in marriage to Les Smith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mayville. For 36 years, she and Les built a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories. Mary worked at SSM Health as a Registered Dietician and Diabetes Educator. She also worked as a consultant dietician at various nursing homes in the area.
With gifted hands and a caring heart, she was known for her talent in sewing and loved to cook and bake, often expressing her care through meals shared around the table. Above all, she cherished the years spent raising her four children, who were her greatest joy in life. She guided them with patience, wisdom, and unwavering love, remaining a constant source of support and encouragement as they grew into adulthood.
Mary is survived by her husband, Les; their children, Travis (Patricia) Smith, Erin Smith, Ryan Smith, and Katelyn (Joe) Blechschmidt; her siblings, Kathy (Carl) Schoene, Mike (Becky) Connelly, and John (Jennifer) Connelly; her sister-in-law, Linda Connelly; and her grandchildren, Joseph, Maria, and Julian Smith. Mary will be fondly remembered and missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Patrick Connelly; and nephew, Matthew Schoene.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (302 S German St. – Mayville, WI 53050) with Father Zachary Galante presiding. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mayville.
Mary will be remembered in the breezes of Door County, on the shores of Pawley’s Island, SC, in the stitches of the many blankets she lovingly sewed, and in memories of the many acts of service and kindness that defined her life.
The family would like to thank the SSM Health Cancer Center, staff at SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, and Rainbow Hospice in Johnson Creek for their care and compassion.
