Mary Alma Supple, 88, of Washington, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024 at home with family by her side.
Mary was born on January 22, 1935 in Newark, NJ to the late Joseph and Marian Walsh. In eighth grade she moved to Lyndhurst where she attended St. Mary's High School. While living in Lyndhurst she met the love of her life, William "Billy" Supple, Jr. She was first drawn to his Catholic devoutness; he was drawn to her "cute legs in those basketball shorts." They were married on October 12, 1957.
Mary loved sports and grew up competing against neighborhood boys in pick-up basketball games. As the boys were taller than Mary's 5'5," she developed a deadly hook shot that became legendary throughout her career. On graduation from Panzer College and William Paterson University, Mary became a physical education teacher at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, NJ where she coached girls' basketball and softball. Bored by retirement after DePaul, she went back to school, earned her special education certification, and taught at the DCF-Regional School-Passaic for disabled children. Mary loved everything about teaching (except IEPs). She especially loved the children and her colleagues.
Mary's life was always about faith, family, friends, and sports. She had a deep faith in God and a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. She had an unquenchable zest for life and lived it to the fullest. Upon her final retirement, she and her husband, Bill resided in Washington, NJ with her daughter Barbara's family. They quickly found a wonderful circle of friends with whom they enjoyed many activities. Mary joyfully attended all her grandchildren's many sporting events and became fast friends with the other fans. Mary and her family loved vacationing together and spent many happy times in Maine and at the Outerbanks. By far the most important thing in Mary's life was her husband, children, grandchildren, family, and dear friends. She treasured her husband, cherished her children, and adored her grandchildren. She was the family's core of love, strength, generosity, humor, and faith.
Mary is survived by her three children: Billy, married to Charlotte; Barbara, married to Thomas; and Nancy, married to Paul. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Matthew, Christopher, Danny, Josh, Liam, Breezy, Rainey, Julianna, and Ryan; her sister, Lois; sisters-in-law Anne, Dot, and Ginny; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Bill, her brothers Jay and Bobby, her sister Virginia, daughter-in-law Charlotte, and nephew Michael.
Mary will always be deeply loved, dearly missed, and fondly remembered.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, January 11, 2023 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Theodore's Roman Catholic Church, 855 NJ-57, Port Murray, NJ 07865. A mass of Christian burial will take place in the church starting at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mary's name to Missionaries of Charity (The Sisters of Mother Teresa) at www.missionariesofcharity.org.
