Mary Lou (Pyne)(Dougherty) Sweeney, age 83, passed away on April 26, 2025. Mary Lou was born in Rye, NY, but spent most of her life in Delaware County, PA. She was a proud graduate of Holy Child High School. After marrying and starting a family, Mary Lou lived in Upper Chichester for many years, where she raised her children. She most recently resided in Glen Mills.
Mary Lou loved her children and grandchildren deeply. Family gatherings, holiday meals, and trips to the shore were cherished moments that Mary Lou spoke of often. She loved to spend time in the yard gardening and tending to her flowerbeds. Mary Lou spent many happy years with her beloved husband, Joe spending quality time with close family and friends. Traveling to many distances near and far brought them much joy and lasting memories.
A woman of deep Catholic faith, Mary Lou was a longtime parishioner of St. John Fisher Church in Boothwyn. She was the church's very first secretary when it opened in the early 1970s and faithfully served in that role until her retirement. Mary Lou also volunteered for many parish committees and organizations throughout the years. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding everything she did.
Mary Lou made many friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Over the years, Mary Lou remained close to her High School friends, commonly referred to as "Club", and cherished their regular gatherings.
She is the daughter of the late William and Dorothy (née McClatchy) Pyne, wife of the late Joseph Sweeney, sister to the late Dorothy "DJ" Hepner, and mother to the late Dan Dougherty.
Survivors: Her loving daughters, Colleen Scelsa (Mike) and Karen Strazdus (Steve); her brother, William "Guy" Pyne (Carol); stepchildren, Joe Sweeney (Joan) and Karen Koussis (Greg); her grandchildren, Sean Dougherty, Michael Scelsa, Lauren Hulsey, Nick Scelsa, Morgan O'Neil, Alexis Kurtz, Kelsey Strazdus, and Kyle Strazdus; step-grandsons Damien Koussis and Nicholas Koussis; her great-grandchildren, Mia Scelsa, Rosie Scelsa, Brian Hulsey, Madilyn Dougherty, Nathan Hulsey, and Hailey Colvin; as well as her loving nephews.
