Mr. Matt Sewell Awbrey, age 64, of Franklin passed away suddenly May 8, 2025.
His funeral will be held Wednesday May 14, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Glenloch Baptist Church with Rev. Neil Awbrey officiating. Interment will follow at Heard County Memorial Gardens.
The family will accept guests at Glenloch Baptist Church Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
Matt was born January 30, 1961 in Heard County to the late Raymond Almon Awbrey and Carolyn Mildred Sewell Awbrey. He was a Baptist by faith.
He was known for being a truck driver, a job he took great pride in. He recorded over four million miles of safe driving on the road without an accident. He was employed by Wal-Mart Transportation for 22 years. While working for them he was honored at the 77'th Annual (2014) National Truck Driving Championship in Pittsburgh, PA in the Sleeper Berth Class. Wal-Mart proclaimed September 17, 2014 "Matt Awbrey Day" at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center.
His family was the most important thing in his life. He had been married to Jessica, who he called "Baby Blue", for 10 years. He dearly loved Maria and Trevor and held a special place in his heart for his grandson, Ryder, who was his world. He was charismatic, comical, and cared deeply about everyone. He recruited drivers for a "Safety Drive for a Cure" event to raise funds to support the fight against children's cancer.
In his free time, one of his passions was sports. He played high school football for his hometown Heard County Braves. Among the positions he played was the kicker. He was a passionate fan of Auburn Tigers Football, and loved to yell "War Eagle" every fall. He also loved to play softball and golf. He was a lover of all animals, especially his beloved dog, Coco.
Survivors include: his wife, Jessica Awbrey of Franklin; two children, Maria Bella Awbrey of Franklin and Trevor Nunis (Tatum) of Hognsville; grandson, Ryder Nunis; a sister, Jean Toney (Gene) of Franklin; two brothers, Don Awbrey of Franklin and Gregg Awbrey (Dee) of LaGrange; a special niece, Brandy Cook; grandmother-in-law, "Nanny", Martha Florence Hendrix; and a number of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Jackie Awbrey, and two nephews, Donnie Awbrey and Zack Daniel.

I'll never forget the first time I met him. Jess and I were out for an evening of sister bonding. Matt walked up and said, Excuse me. But you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. He was looking right at Jess with so much love in his eyes. I knew right the Jess had met her soulmate. She tired red as a pepper and looked back at him. There gaze into each other's eyes was magical. At that moment everyone else in the room faded away like a movie. It was just the two of them. Matt loved and pampered Jess from that moment until the day he reluctantly passed on from this world. A love like that transcends into eternity.
Jess you were blessed to have him. Cherish your memories of Matt and know that you were his world.
I love you baby sister and I'm always here for you. As a listening ear, a tight hug or a good laugh. You are never alone.
