Matthew Campbell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stitzel Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc - Oley on Mar. 7, 2026.
Matthew Glenn Campbell, 46, of Gilbertsville, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at his residence.

He was the loving husband of Jessica (Diimmler) Campbell whom he married September 21, 2002.

Born June 9, 1979, he was the son of Valerie (Caron) Campbell and the late Glenn Campbell.

Matthew was a 1997 graduate of Northern High School in York, PA. He then graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in University Park with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Resource Management and a minor in Military Studies in 2001. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Touro University International.

Both of Matthew's parents served in the USAF, and he always knew that he wanted to serve his country. His first accomplishment towards that goal was earning the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating college, Matthew was commissioned into the United States Air Force, which he proudly served for 20 years. As a navigator in the C-130H Hercules, he participated in humanitarian missions such as Tsunami rescue efforts in Thailand in 2004, and typhoon relief during his time in the Pacific Theater. His combat deployments included Operation Enduring Freedom at Karshi Kandabad in Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom at Camp Liberty in Iraq, Al Udieid Air Base in Qatar, and Balad Air Base in Iraq. He retired at the rank of Major in 2021. Matthew became an Air Force JROTC instructor at Muhlenberg High School for five years, where he taught students his core values: to support and defend the US Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution and to take this obligation without reservation. The commitment to service above self is what his cadets gain from participation in the program.

When Matthew wasn't trying to help develop better citizens, he spent most waking moments taking care of his family. Friends have described Matthew as the ultimate "swim dad" for his three beautiful daughters. He enjoyed spending time reading (arguably the most boring historical non-fiction books) and watching sports. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to new places they both had never seen, and he was proud that he visited all seven continents.

In addition to his wife Jessica, surviving are three children: Annabel Campbell; Gabrielle Campbell; and Evelyn Campbell.

He is also survived by his mother and sister, Sara (Campbell) Harrum (George) of Montreal, Canada.

Matthew was predeceased by a son, Cooper Campbell, who passed away in 2012.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Stitzel Family Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., Oley, 423 Main Street, Oley, PA 19547. The service and burial will be held later that day, at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

I have known you for 2 years, and it feels like a long time. I regret not asking how you were or how your day was. I know you were hard on us, but it was for a good reason. You wanted us to be good people in life, and now that you won't be there for us when we succeed, it's even more important. I know that you would´ve been proud of us. I loved the stories that you would tell us. The crazy ones, the funny ones, the happy ones, and the sad ones. When we found out what happened, it was the worst news of our lives. I would have never thought that something like this would happen. It would drive me crazy to see you not here with us. You weren't the nicest person, but you were one of the most real person, and when something was wrong, you would say it. You always had an opinion on everything. I loved that you were never afraid to overcome anything. You were the best advice giver, the best father, the best friend, and the best major. We will forever miss you and will keep you in our hearts. Rest in peace, to the best major.

Major,
Thank you for believing in me when life got hard. Even tho you got mad at me sometimes, you still were so proud of me. The day I won best cadet in PA, I fully understood how proud you were. I was so excited to come back home from Pittsburgh and just tell you my school stories and how Pitt is better than Penn state and have a whole talk about it. Tell you about marching band, and just talk about how I am finally accomplishing my dreams. Major is the reason I am in this position today, he was the first person I told when I visited the school that I was recently diagnosed with depression and anxiety and he never judged me. He didn´t treat no one differently, he wanted the best for all of us no matter who we were or our past. To his family, know that he was an amazing man and amazing person who cared for everyone. He never once turned his head from a challenge. He wanted us to accomplish everything. Know that he is the reason students from Muhlenberg believe that good people do exist and want the best for us.
Rest easy Major, you did it. The one thing you were searching for in us, to find greatness and to raise citizens of character. You did it.
