Matthew Joseph Devine, beloved husband, father, son, and brother, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The son of Edward and Joan Devine, who predeceased him, Matt was born on February 3, 1961, in
Cleveland, Ohio. He spent most of his life in
Greenville, South Carolina, and was 65 years old.
A devoted husband, Matt shared 25 years of marriage with his wife, Heather. A man of deep Christian faith, he believed that serving the Lord came first and cared deeply that his children would grow up with a strong personal relationship with Christ. Matt served faithfully on the vestry and as an usher, where he enjoyed greeting members each Sunday morning. He was also known for slipping out of church right after communion, a trait his family remembers fondly.
Matt was known for his positivity and grace. He never met a stranger, and it was not uncommon to walk in somewhere and hear someone call out his name. He was quick to forgive and truly believed everyone deserved kindness and grace, no matter their position in life.
A proud and loving father, Matt took immense joy in raising his children, affectionately referring to them as DK5. He was known for his Saturday routine, which included a trip to the dump, picking up the dry cleaning, and bringing breakfast home to the family. Unless he decided to cook himself, in which case chocolate chip pancakes and scrapple were on the menu.
Family gatherings meant everything to Matt. Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He lived by the phrase "the more the merrier" and loved bringing people together, often surprising Heather by inviting a few extra guests to any gathering they hosted.
Matt attended the University of South Carolina and was a proud Gamecock, though his true sports loyalties belonged to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies. An accomplished businessman, he served as President and CEO of DHM Adhesives, which he successfully led until the company was acquired by HB Fuller in 2019. Known for his ability to connect with people, Matt earned the nickname "The Glue Guy." As many would say, no one could sell better than the Glue Guy.
Basketball was one of Matt's greatest lifelong passions. As a young boy, he would set his parents' alarm clock early so he could sneak in extra time practicing before school. He spent decades coaching youth basketball, including many of his children's teams, and took immense pride in helping young players grow both on and off the court. Golf was another great love, and he cherished annual golf trips and rounds played with his close friends. He especially enjoyed organizing rounds for his sons and friends.
Generosity was a defining part of Matt's life. He believed strongly in tithing and giving back, supporting causes such as Captain Pete's charity feeding children in Africa, JDRF, and cardiac amyloidosis research through the Sean McDonough Celebrity Golf Tournament.
Throughout his life, Matt set meaningful goals. He once shared that he hoped to celebrate 50 years of marriage with Heather, raise a "basketball team" of children, walk his daughters down the aisle, and give generously to charity. He even planned to write a book titled Dream, Goals, and Results, his guidance for anyone striving to succeed in business and in life.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Heather, are three sons and two daughters: Matthew (Elisa) Devine of Anderson; Mary (Michael) Selvaggio of Greenville; Jack Devine of Charleston; William Devine of Greenville; and Margaret Devine of Greenville; two grandsons, Jackson and Beckham; and three siblings: Edward of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; Sean of Simpsonville; and Patrice of Wellford.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Matt's primary caregiver, Danielle, and to Via Health Partners for their compassionate care.
Matt will be greatly missed by many and remembered for his faith, his generosity, and the joy he brought to every room he entered.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiated by the Reverend Thomas "T" C. Brown. Burial will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park, with a reception afterward at Holly Tree Country Club.
