Mattie T. Wanta, 104, of Bevent, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, with her family by her side, at Benedictine Living Community in Wausau, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.
Mattie was born on July 21, 1920, in Bevent, the daughter of Peter and Susan (Gorski) Cebula.
Mattie was a lifelong member of St. Ladislaus Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married.
On November 4, 1939, Mattie was united in marriage to Anton Wanta at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent. Mattie and Anton built Wanta's Bar in 1948. They worked side by side managing and running the bar, until Anton's death on April 30, 1979.
Mattie was a member of St. Ladislaus Rosary Society for over 50 years. She faithfully worked at the church picnic every year into her 90s. Mattie enjoyed gardening and often canned and froze her vegetables. She was an excellent baker and took pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren saying she made the best pancakes. Mattie enjoyed her occasional trips to the casino.
Mattie is survived by three sons, Dave (Jenny Awana) Wanta of Schofield, Jack (Sue) Wanta of Bevent, Ron (Deb) Wanta of Bevent; son-in-law, Clarence 'Kelly' Wanta of Bevent; seven grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Wanta of Las Vegas, Bruce (Cindi) Wanta of Mosinee, Bryan (Tammy) Wanta of Bevent, Troy (Ginger) Wanta of Las Vegas, Clay (Kurtis Burton) Wanta of Eau Claire, Clint (Gail) Wanta of Elk Mound, and Heidi Wanta of Shawano; 12 great grandchildren, Mandy Wanta, Angie Wanta, Kristen (Nathan) Mollan, Katelyn (Logan) Lopas, Tyler Wanta, Kyle (Christina) Wanta, Isaac (Madelynn) Wanta, Evan Wanta, Willem Cabout, Matilda Cabout, Benton Cabout, and Atlas Krause; five great-great grandchildren, Trenton, Cason, Cash, Ashton and Jett; siblings, William (Mary Ann) Cybula of Ringle, Natalie Ostrowski of Bevent, James (Marsha) Cebula of Milwaukee; sister-in-law, Gladys Cebula of Bevent and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Adeline Wanta; siblings and in-laws, Lambert (Helen) Gorski, Henry (Doris) Cebula, Alex Cebula, Daniel Cebula, Pauline (Bob) Page, Marion Kostka, and LaVerne Ostrowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, August. 23, 2024, at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Bevent. Rev. Augustine Bentil will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, from 9 AM until the time of Mass at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked donations be made in Mattie's name to St. Ladislaus Catholic Church.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Benedictine for the kindness, compassion and love shown to Mattie and her family. They would also like to thank Jen Yurish and the staff at Aspirus Hospice team for their support and care to Mattie and her family. Also a thank you to the staff at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home.
