Maureen A. Kniffen, 84, of Newark Valley, passed away at her home on February 26, 2025. Born in Johnson City, NY, Maureen was the daughter of the late George and Edith Kelley.
She is survived by her children Terri McCarthy, Bobbie (Dave), and Tony (Claudine Paccio), as well as her loving grandchildren Jack (Kendall), Kelley (Terri), Levi (Julie), Will (Elizabeth), Kaili, Kade, and Ty (Tony), and one great-grandchild Penelope. She is also survived by her siblings Mary (Anthony) Liguori and Kevin Farrell, along with several nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Maureen was predeceased by her husband William "Bill" Kniffen in 2023, her daughter Rebecca 'Becky' Palmer, in 2013, her son-in-law John McCarthy, and her siblings Betty Brewer, Rose Marie Ondrusak, and Robert Kelley.
Her professional life was deeply rooted in the Newark Valley Central Schools, where she served with distinction in several capacities before finding her calling as librarian. Her commitment to the students was unwavering, and she became a beloved figure within the school community. Her ability to listen and provide assistance was more than a job; it was her way of nurturing the growth and potential of every young person she encountered. Many of these students maintained a bond with her long after their graduation, a testament to the profound impact she had on their lives.
In 2018, Maureen was honored with the role of Grand Marshal in the Newark Valley Homecoming Parade. It was a public recognition of the love and support she had offered to so many throughout her years at the school.
Maureen's interests and activities extended well beyond the school grounds. She was a vibrant presence at St. John the Evangelist Church in Newark Valley, where her faith and fellowship were integral parts of her life. Her social nature led her to forge countless friendships within the community, each one cherished and nurtured with care.
A master of celebration, Maureen took great joy in marking special occasions with her family and friends. Her kitchen was a hub of activity, with the scents of freshly baked goods and lovingly prepared meals often wafting through the air. These gestures of kindness were not reserved for her inner circle alone; neighbors and friends were frequent recipients of her generosity.
Maureen's legacy is one of love, passion, and thoughtfulness. She put others before herself, driven by a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of those around her. Her life was a reflection of her values, and her actions an embodiment of the gratitude she felt for the people in her life.
