Maureen Porod (nee Kavanagh), 75, of Midland Park, New Jersey passed away peacefully on May 7, 2023. She was surrounded by her immediate family, a blessing that meant so much to her.
Maureen was born April 3,1948 to William and Olive Kavanagh in her Ridgewood home on Doremus Avenue. She was the second oldest of five children. She went to Mount Carmel Elementary School, graduated from Ridgewood High School, and attended Alphonsus College.
At the age of 17, she began working at the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) on Broad Street in Ridgewood. There she met the love of her life, John, 19, of Hawthorne, NJ. Maureen (Mosey) knew that he would be her lifelong partner. Not even a snowstorm could keep them from their first date at the drive-in movie.
On July 20, 1968, Maureen and John wed at Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood. They would build a beautiful life together grounded in faith, honesty, hard work, and especially humor. Their first home was a 150 year old house on a farm in Wayne, where the floor sloped and cows mooed. From there, in 1972, they moved to their forever home on Millington Drive in Midland Park.
Maureen worked at Valley Hospital for over 27 years. She began in 1980 in the transport department, then transitioned to a secretarial position in the surgical department. For each weekend that she worked, Maureen would bake something special for the doctors and staff to enjoy. All looked forward to her delicious treats.
Upon her retirement, Maureen was able to travel and enjoy her favorite place: the beach. During their time together, she and John sailed on over 50 cruises to locations including Bermuda, the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Canada, and Hawaii. Each winter they became "snow birds" and would journey south to spend time in Florida. Hours were spent enjoying the beach, reading, swimming, hot tubbing, and in later years, mastering shuffle board.
Anyone that met Maureen could feel her genuine kindness and compassion. Each day she would pray for those in need.
Maureen is survived by her devoted husband, John, three loving children Dawn, John, and Jason and their spouses Jim, Lauren, and Leigh, as well as her three beautiful grandchildren Gwenyth, Addison, and Jason (JJ). She is also survived by her siblings Olive Johnson, Bill Kavanagh, Claire Gambale, and Peter Kavanagh.
A Funeral Mass in celebration of Maureen's life will take place on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street Midland Park, NJ 07432.

Maureen and John were friends of my husband and myself. We met through their neighbors, Mike and Carol Ferrara. Every time we got together we would have a great time. So friendly and humorous. So sorry that all who knew her, lost a wonderful friend. May peace with her and all the family and friends who will miss her...... . Diane Castino
