below is a message shared by Dan for his mother...
This is one of last photos of my Mom. She passed this last week. Almost made it to 101 years of age. She was exceptionally bright and believed in giving everyone a fair shake. She loved a spirited game of pinochle, a good book, interacting with friends, a well shaken lemon drop martini, and games of chance. She volunteered at the local hospital for over twenty years and worked most every election for about as long as I can remember. She, my gramma, and my Auntie Margaret used to ride a sled to the Parkdale schools where she and Margaret attended school, and gramma cooked. They (and the sled) would either ride the bus home or catch a ride with Grampa after he was done working in the woods or the mill. She met my father (the older bad boy) in Parkdale. She had bright red hair and freckles. And from the pictures that I've seen, she weighed probably about 85 pounds when she married my dad. This was about the time that he left for the Coast Guard. It was World War II. They both eventually returned to Hood River and lived in an apartment so small that the refrigerator that they shared with their neighbor was out in the hallway between their apartments. My parents built their home for a whopping total of $3000 and paid it off in two years before having children. Dad worked a number of jobs but mostly at a fruit cannery and Mom was a bookkeeper. We didn't have much and our diet was mostly steelhead, garden vegetables, and venison (some of which was harvested legally). We canned or froze food items in our trusty Amana freezer in the basement. That freezer lasted for well over 40 years. I remember the day that the freezer arrived. Back then, if you purchased a freezer, often it came fully stocked. I remember that this freezer had orange juice (a rarity for us because it was too expensive) and a lot of hamburger. My mom always believed in me and that's what I will remember about her. Thank you, Mom. There will be a simple graveside service for her on this Saturday, March 22 at noon at the Pine Grove Butte cemetery off Highway 35 south of Hood River. You are all invited to attend. Please no gifts, cards, flowers, or green jello/cottage cheese casserole. Good bye, Mom, I love you.
