CHESAPEAKE – Meredith G. Garrett, retired Baptist Minister, received his eternal reward as he went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2023. He was born in Norge, VA, on November 15, 1925, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Garrett. He was married to Betty Wilder Garrett in November of 1947.
He grew up on a farm, and as a WWII Veteran, was drafted into the Army in 1945, acquiring the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving an Honorable discharge. Following his military service, he opened a grocery store and worked in that business for seven years. Answering the call of the Lord, he sold his business and went into Full-time Christian ministry.
Rev. Garrett enrolled in Carson Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. in 1954. While attending Carson Newman he was ordained as the Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Newport, TN. After receiving his BA Degree, he enrolled at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC. Upon completion of that curriculum, he received a Master of Divinity Degree in 1965. He had the privilege of pastoring several Churches; Glebe Landing Baptist Church, Laneview, VA; Round Oak Baptist Church, Corbin, VA; Rocky Hock Baptist Church, Edenton, NC, and retired after 19 years of service to Bayview Baptist Church, Norfolk VA.
In addition to his pastorates, he served as Chairman of Evangelism in the Mid-Tidewater Baptist Association; held numerous revivals in several states; taught in retreats sponsored by the Baptist General Board of Virginia, served as a counselor in a Pastoral Clinic under the sponsorship of the city of Fredericksburg, VA; and continued in retirement to serve as interim pastor to nine churches in NC and VA.
Rev. Garrett lived his life doing the things that he loved, serving the Lord. He retired in Chesapeake, VA, where he enjoyed the companionship of Betty, his wife of 75 years. He is survived by his four sons and their wives, Meredith Jr, (Roberta); Matthew, (Becky); Lynn, (Donna); Gary, (Heather); seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA at 6 p.m., August 18th. The officiating ministers will be his Sons. A private family burial will be in Williamsburg Memorial Park, 130 King William Dr., Williamsburg VA.

Mark and I have such great memories of your Dad at Bayview. Not only did he marry us on August 21, 1976 but we were able to sit under the teaching of the word for years at Bayview. We know you are rejoicing in his home coming even though it is bitter sweet. We have hope knowing there is no sweeter word to be spoke at a graveside then "Grace"!

I always remember pastor Garrett quoting " be sure- your sins will find you out!" Since I was a teenager every time I thought of doing something ungodly - I hear his voice. Sometimes on a daily basis! Thank you Mr Garrett!

The time Pastor Garrett was preaching and saying we needed to watch our weight ladies (something like that), and Fran mix said" don´t go there pastor" it was so funny! I love Pastor Garrett and all of his family.
