Meyer Lefkowitz Obituary

LEFKOWITZ, Meyer Bear, 89, beloved father, husband, and decorated World War II veteran, son of the late Jacob and Pearl Lefkowitz of Richmond, passed away February 1, 2009. A longtime resident of Richmond, he was a local sports hero in the 1930s, where he played all sports at Thomas Jefferson High School and was recognized as an All State athlete in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mr. Lefkowitz attended the University of Richmond, where he was a scholar-athlete and was scouted by a Major League Baseball team. Mr. Lefkowitz served with the 77th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army and was wounded at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines; for his gallant service he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a longtime business fixture in South Richmond, where he and his late wife, Shirley Romm Lefkowitz, owned and operated Morris Romm Plumbing and Heating Supplies. Mr. Lefkowitz is survived by his three sons, Andrew M., Jerry B. and Robert A. Lefkowitz; a grandson, Adam Michael Lefkowitz; granddaughter, Rebecca Pearl Lefkowitz; and a great-grandson, Carter Adam Lefkowitz. Andy M. Lefkowitz, a licensed social worker, and his wife, Marcella R. Lefkowitz, a registered nurse, reside in Philadelphia, Penn. with Rebecca P. Lefkowitz. Jerry B. Lefkowitz, a physician, resides in New York City. Robert Lefkowitz, an attorney, resides in Winston-Salem, N.C. with his wife, Jan W. Lefkowitz. Adam M. Lefkowitz and his wife, Alicia, and his son, Carter, reside in Sterling, Va. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Veterans Organizations, or a charity of your choice. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (today) at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Beth El at Forest Lawn Cemetery with interment to follow. Arrangements by Bliley's-Central Chapel.
