Michael Alexander Ashlin

Michael Alexander Ashlin, 73, passed away surrounded by his loving family on the morning of March 16, 2024 in Norfolk Virginia, after a long courageous and heartbreaking battle with Parkinson's dementia.
He was born to the late Lawrence and Pieternella Ashlin in Aruba on September 25, 1950. Michael attended Maury High School and was in the US Army for a short period of time. He was employed at Metro Machine for 14 years and worked himself up to Assistant Pipe Shop Foreman. He also worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 2 years. Michael's last employment was with Marine Hydraulic International for 27 years where he retired as the Pipe Shop Superintendent. He was respected and loved by many of his co-workers and remained life-time friends.
Early on as a child, Michael developed a love for fishing which he passed on this hobby to many. He also spent many hours on his boat with Brenda relaxing and listening to his favorite tunes as well as tubing with his children and grand-kids. He was a true fisherman with a kind heart. Besides fishing and boating, he loved dancing and music. Sometimes he would put on a show on the dance floor. Michael also loved nature: feeding birds and ducks on the Indian River. Every year, he would plant Moon Flowers in pots and give to family and friends. Another hobby that Michael enjoyed was taking pictures and videos of nature and family events. Not only did Michael enjoy the beauty of nature, but he also loved his pets, taking care of them like his family.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving partner of 33 years, Brenda Schultz; son, Stephen Ashlin (Nicola); daughter, Janice Strausburg (Steve); 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Jenny Abrigo (Rome); sister, Maggie Padilla (Jose); sister, Sydney Ashlin; sister, Mary Kramer (Lex); uncle, Franklin Schoon (Lauren).
Proceeded in death by his former spouse, Mary Susan Ashlin; and brother, Richard Ashlin.
Michael loved the Lord, family and friends immensely. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 5033 Rouse Dr. Virginia Beach, VA, 23462, March 26, 2024 (Tuesday), Time: 4:30 to 6:00 followed by service in the Chapel at 6:00. Please join us for refreshments and to share memories of Mike after the service.
