Michael Blackburn Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 28, 2025.
Michael Dennis Blackburn of Vanderbilt, MI, known affectionately to family and friends as "Sr." or "Grampy", passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 at the age of 85. His life began in Detroit on June 25, 1940, as the treasured son of the late Sumner and Gretchen Blackburn and brother to the late Patrick Blackburn. He is also preceded in death by his former wife and mother of his children, Margaret Patrick.
A proud alumnus of Michigan State University, Mike pursued his love of horticulture as a landscape architect for many years before taking the reins of Blackburn Sporting Goods when his father retired. It was an easy transition as he loved sports and remained a lifetime Spartans fan.
Mike's passion for the great outdoors was evident to all who knew him. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed his time hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time on his property up north, "the ranch". His love for bonsai was more than a hobby; it was a passion he cultivated with precision and patience and was well known in the bonsai community for his amazing collection. Much of Mike's life included a four-legged family member which was always a beagle and the name would always be the same for each, Bubbs, with the exception of his last dog, sweet Daisy.
Mike's legacy includes a loving family who will miss him dearly: his loving children Suzanne (Mike) Trupiano and Michael Blackburn "Jr.", along with his cherished grandchildren, Lindsay (Bobby) Eisen, Garrett Trupiano, Bobby (Jill) Trupiano, and Renee Trupiano. His joy multiplied with his great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Blake Eisen, Justin (Sara) Trupiano, Aiden, Rocco, Andie, Luke, and Gino Trupiano. Then the long awaited arrival of a great-great grandchild, Leo Trupiano. He is also survived by his much-loved niece and nephew, Mary (Jeff) White and Nicholas Serra. Mike's circle of love and friendship extended to close companions Linda Wytka and Mike Menkes, whose shared memories will continue to honor his vibrant life.
As we bid farewell to Mike, we reflect on a life well-lived, anchored in love, adventure, and the joy of shared experiences. The imprint of his spirit will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warriors Project and Blue Water Humane Society.
