Newport – Michael Jean Braswell, 78, passed away on Monday, February 2nd, 2026, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 8th, 2026, at 2pm in the Edwards Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mike lived the majority of his life in Kinston and had a successful career in automotive sales and finance. He worked with Roy's Nissan, Massey Motors, and Winner Chevrolet. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to the coast.

Throughout his life, Mike had a passion for music (especially beach music), as well as the New York Yankees, UNC Tarheels, golf, grilling, and collecting bourbon. Above all, he will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, and his ability to always have a story ready to tell. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Baker and husband Rivers; father, Sammy Braswell; and his beloved dog, Nellie.

Mike is survived by his wife, Joan Braswell of Newport; son, Jeffrey Braswell and wife Josie; brother, Kenny Baker (Nancy); sisters, Debra King, Sandra Rouse, all of Kinston, and Debbie Paulos of Augusta, Georgia; his two precious grandsons, Jack and James; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arendell Parrott Academy, 1901 Dobbs Farm Rd, Kinston, NC 28504, or the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike´s family. I knew Mike since grammar school at Southwood School and graduated from high school with him at South Lenoir High School. Mike was always fun to be around and ready to tell you a story. I know he will be missed by his family and all that knew him.
