Michael Byrd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Jan. 10, 2026.
Michael Allen Byrd, 61, of Cape Charles, Virginia, passed away on Monday, December 29, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 19, 1964, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Shirley and Robert Byrd.
Michael grew up in Great Bridge and attended Great Bridge High School where he enjoyed debate, ran cross-country and wrestled. During his youth, Michael achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that reflected his discipline, leadership, and love of the outdoors. He developed a passion for surfing and snow skiing and spending time in the sun-earning the nickname "Whitey" from his sun-bleached blond hair.
Michael went on to earn a degree in accounting from Old Dominion University and built a successful career as a financial advisor. He retired as a Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo Advisors, a role that showcased his integrity, dedication, and ability to connect with people. Charismatic and outgoing, Michael truly could strike up a conversation with anyone and loved being around others.
An avid outdoorsman, Michael found joy in hunting and fishing throughout his life. His love of duck hunting began in his teenage years alongside his father, Bobby, and later expanded into deer hunting, particularly during cherished trips to the mountains with his close friend Martin Corbett. Fishing became a favorite pastime as an adult, creating countless unforgettable memories-especially during the annual Eastern Shore fishing trips with many of his favorite people. His lifelong affection for seafood, particularly oysters, began in childhood and never faded.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Lori, for over 33 years. Together they built a beautiful life and raised their children, Taylor and Maggie, in his hometown of Great Bridge. Drawing on skills learned through scouting, Michael developed a love of camping and spending time outdoors with his family. Time spent in Cape Hatteras and on the Eastern Shore deepened his affection for those places, eventually leading Michael and Lori to retire to the Eastern Shore-a place Michael adored. He often said it reminded him of Great Bridge "back in the day."
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Katherine Lori Byrd; his son, Taylor Walker Byrd; his daughter, Maggie Elizabeth Byrd (fiancé Tommy Bragg); his parents, Robert and Shirley Byrd; his parents-in-law, James and Jane Bragg; his sister, Shelley Byrd White, brother-in-law, Jeffrey White; his nieces Mary-Parker White and Meredith White; his nephew Jackson White; sister-in-law, Beth Clark, brother-in-law, Rick Clark; aunts, uncles, cousins; and "little sis" Paige Corin.
Michael will be remembered for his infectious spirit, love of laughter, and deep devotion to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the memories made beside the water, in the woods, and at home with those he loved.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Michael's name to Chesapeake Bay Foundation or any charity of your choice.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Saturday, January 17 at 2:00, Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 201 Saint Paul's Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23510.
