Michael P. Cook of Tracys Landing, MD, passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 76, after a long battle with kidney disease. He was born on January 5, 1949, to John and Grace Cook and was raised in Shady Side, MD.
After serving two years in the U.S. Navy, Mike opened a motorcycle shop, Head Cycle, in Annapolis, MD. Around this same time, he met "a girl named Linda Lou", who helped him start the business-and who, years later, would become his wife. Mike loved Harley-Davidsons, and she loved riding with him, holding on tight on the back of that road-stripe-yellow chopper.
After several years in the motorcycle business, Mike turned his focus back to the water. For most of his career, he worked as a marine mechanic. Throughout the 1980s, he owned and operated Parish Creek Marina (now Clarks Landing) in Shady Side, MD. He was also a commercial waterman and loved being out on the Chesapeake Bay-crabbing, fishing, or just having fun. After selling the marina, he opened Cook's Mobile Marine Service and continued working on the Bay, repairing and servicing boats until his retirement. In 2002, Mike earned his USCG Merchant Marine Officer Certification, officially earning the nickname "Captain Cook."
Mike was known to be quite a character and left an impression on everyone he met. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and will be missed greatly by so many. After retiring, he loved sitting in his truck with his late dog, Snuffy, listening to baseball, football, and hockey games, or NASCAR, and just watching the world go by.
Mike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Lou Dawson Cook; two sons, Michael J. Cook (Meredith) of Mooresville, NC, and Steven J. Cook (Olivia) of Deale, MD; and two stepsons, Jason S. Hahn (Diana) of Riva, MD, and Ryan D. Hahn (Raka) of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Julia and Dillon Hahn and Charlotte Cook; step-grandchildren, Anthony and Luca Ruli; brother, John N. Cook; and nephew, Timothy Cook. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Grace Cook, and nephew, Johnny Cook.
In memory of Mike, a Celebration of Life will be held on October 18, 2025, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Cedarhurst Community House, 5187 Chesapeake Ave., Shady Side, MD 20764. All family and friends are invited to come and share memories.
