Michael Ross Harju

Michael Ross Harju, aged 78, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, in East Lansing, MI. He was born on September 18, 1946, in Wakefield, MI, to the late Axel and Selma (Seppa) Harju.
A proud graduate of Wakefield High School, Michael furthered his education at Gogebic Community College. He dedicated many years of service to the State of Michigan, retiring as an MDOT Drafting Technician in 1997. His work ethic and attention to detail were recognized and respected by all who worked alongside him.
Michael's life was marked by his unwavering faith as a devout Christian and former member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. His beliefs guided him through life's challenges and joys, providing comfort and strength to him and those he loved.
A veteran of the United States Army, Michael served his country with honor from 1967 to 1968, continuing his commitment in the Reserves until 1973. His patriotism was a core part of his identity, and he often reflected on his service with pride.
Passionate about woodworking, camping, reading, and trains, Michael found solace and joy in his many hobbies. He was particularly fond of hiking in the Upper Peninsula, where the beauty of nature was a constant source of inspiration and renewal for him. However, it was the time spent with his family that Michael treasured above all. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his son, Jason Harju; his daughter, Jeri (Eric) Mannion; his adored grandchildren, Jack and Valerie Mannion, and Tatiana Harju; and his great-grandchild, Zayden.
Michael is survived by his brother, Alan (Nancy) Harju, and sister, Denise Harju, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins, who will miss his guidance and warmth. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Jeanne Harju, with whom he shared a profound and enduring love, and by his brother Dana Harju. His longtime companion, Cathe Florian, also preceded him in death.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025 – 11:00 a.m. at Mills Funeral Home, Peters & Murray Chapel, 301 E. Jefferson, Grand Ledge, MI with a visitation one hour prior to the service; interment with Military Honors will directly follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery.
