It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Michael (Mike) Edward Helbig on October 12, 2024, at the age of 58. Mike faced the challenges of Juvenile Diabetes since the age of 16 but lived each day with resilience and a smile that could light up any room.
Mike loved his beautiful children, Julia and Myers, and his step-son, Michael Peck. His family meant the world to him. He was a wonderful brother who enjoyed spending time with his siblings, Julie (Scott) Zipfel, Mary (Drew) Nardi, Joe (Gina) Helbig and Bob (Melissa) Helbig. He cherished his role as an uncle to three nieces and five nephews, always bringing joy and laughter to family gatherings. He was preceded in death by his parents MaryAnn Helbig and Robert Helbig.
A passionate cyclist, Mike rode his bike at every opportunity. He was an adventurous soul who craved the outdoors. Mike had a deep appreciation for all kinds of music which filled him with much happiness. His warmth and enthusiasm for life will be remembered by all who knew him. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others, never knowing a stranger and always ready to lend a helping hand or share a kind word. His compassion and positivity touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Thursday, October 24th, 2024 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Braun Family Funeral Home in Columbia, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to help support the fight against this disease that he faced with such courage.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your smile and laughter will forever echo in our hearts.
