Michael Jon Hilbert passed away on January 19, 2025, at the age of 80 in
Katy, Texas.
He was born on August 7, 1944, in Seguin, Texas, to George and Alvina Hilbert. Michael attended Seguin public schools and graduated from Seguin High School in 1962. He attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas and graduated in January of 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Upon graduation, Mike immediately started working for Shell Oil Company in Midland, Texas. When Shell relocated their offices to Houston, Texas, in 1974, Michael moved to Houston too. He retired from the company in 1994.
After retiring from Shell, Mike began working for the POGO Producing Company, an oil and gas company in Houston. He retired from POGO in 2005.
Mike was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He spent 1968 – 1969 in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge, he returned to his job with Shell in Midland.
In 1970, Mike was introduced to Margie Ann Schneider by his brother Jim Hilbert. Margie was a teacher on Jim's team at Jefferson Elementary School in Seguin. After a long-distance courtship, Mike and Margie were married on December 26, 1970. They were blessed with two sons, Michael David, born in 1975, and Matthew Karl, born in 1982. Mike and Margie recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
Mike loved sports, and his favorite was baseball. He coached most of the sports teams that both his sons played on. He also loved to take family road trips. Mike visited every state in the United States except Hawaii. Mike loved to read and was especially fond of books about wars. He visited most of the major Civil War battlefields during his road trips.
Since he was retired when his granddaughters were born, Mike was able to spend lots of time with them. Hailey Madison Hilbert was born in 2008 and her sister, Hannah Madeline, was born in 2012. He loved to take them swimming and play board games with them. They were such a blessing in his life.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Margie; his sons, Michael David and wife Holly, Matthew Karl and wife Kelsey; his brothers, Jim and wife Lenoir, Don and wife Barbara; his brother-in-law, Joe Schneider and wife Laura; his sister-in-law, Sandra Stout and husband Quinn; his grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Maurice; and his sisters, Gail Dismukes and Shirley Gilliland and husband Paul.
Mike was raised as a Lutheran and was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church in
Katy, Texas for many years. Visitation will be held at 9:00 am at Living Word Lutheran Church, 3700 S. Mason Rd,
Katy, Texas 77450, on Saturday, February 1, 2025. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 am with Pastor Mark England officiating. There will be a graveside service at 1:00 pm at Katy Magnolia Cemetery, 6801 Franz Rd,
Katy, Texas 77493.
