Mike Calus

I think I first met Michael in elementary school. Some kids from his school were bused to ours for one or 2 years. So he was more than a familiar face when we started Eastridge Jr High. We had a lot of classes together. He was a smart student, and independent thinker. He played Tennis and Soccer. Like most of the Lancers teams, we learned more about the agony of defeat than the thrill of victory. That is a hard but valuable life lesson EHS alumni can appreciate.
Mike had a confidence that seemed genuine. He didn't have to follow the crowd. He had an easy smile and an infectious laugh.
Credit to his Mom and Dad, their home was welcoming to friends stopping in to pick Mike up for a school event, mini golf, midnight golf, paint ball or whatever we could find to do that mostly kept us out of trouble.
Mike and I went to see U2 at the Carrier Dome in the fall of '87. This was the Joshua Tree tour and we pulled an all-nighter to make sure we got a good place in line to get tickets at the H.O.G. We played Frisbee in Sibley's parking lot to stay awake. Fun times for fresh HS grads
Mike was one of a few classmates who joined the services. It's an honor to have called them friends. Mike and Dan DeJohn served in Desert Storm while we watched it on TV from the comfort of our homes and schools. We were proud of them and glad to have them home afterwards.
Mike, Dan, Rob Lape and I were close friends through our 20s as Mike finished his service and started college. We eventually lost touch after I married and moved to NC. It looks like he made the most of his education and had a happy family with Kim and 4 kids.
I'm happy for him and his family for the rich life he had and shared, but so sad that it ended so young.
My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends. May you all cherish and support each other through these difficult days.
