Michael "Mike" Charles Amos

Michael “Mike” Charles Amos, 79, of Canyon, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Family visitation will be held from 6:00–7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Honors will be provided by Volleys for Veterans and the Amarillo Police Department. Burial will be private.

Mike was born in Galveston, Texas, on September 13, 1946, to Ala Mae Toler and Malcolm Orville Amos. As a 12-year-old boy in Dallas, Texas, he survived a life-threatening accident when a stray bullet pierced his lungs—an injury that could have ended his life, yet he fought through recovery and emerged stronger. 

Mike honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he was part of a flight crew and worked as a skilled helicopter mechanic. His expertise allowed him to perform rapid, critical repairs on damaged aircraft – often helicopters – under intense pressure and in hostile conditions, keeping vital missions airborne and saving lives in the process. These experiences, combined with his later career in law enforcement, highlighted the unyielding grit and resourcefulness that defined him: a warrior who met every challenge head-on and never backed down.

After his military service, Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from West Texas State University, equipping him for his dedicated career in public service. He began his long and distinguished tenure with the Amarillo Police Department, where he served faithfully for 30 years in numerous roles, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant over the SWAT and Narcotics Division.

On December 5, 1970, Mike married the love of his life, Margie Beth Kendrick. Together they built a warm, loving home in Amarillo. In 2025, Mike and Margie celebrated 55 years of marriage in the home that Mike built for them outside of Canyon, Texas. 

Mike lived a life defined by loyalty, service, and simple joys. He loved nothing more than riding his Harley with friends across the Lower 48, especially to favorite destinations like Sturgis, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Grand Junction/Ouray region. For 45 years, he proudly upheld an annual fishing trip tradition with his closest friends – never missing a single year. He also treasured his weekly Tuesday lunches with friends and family. 

Mike was a man of many interests beyond his service and adventures. He raised honeybees and quickly sold out of his “famous Amos honey,” as his loyal customers fondly called it. He was an avid gardener, tending his plants with the same care he gave everything he loved. Mike also enjoyed attending auctions to carefully select breeding stock, particularly for his passion project of raising high-quality Angus cattle. He took great pride in building and growing his herd, from nurturing the animals to eventually selling them at market. Whether working with bees, tending his garden, or building his herd, Mike approached everything with dedication and a craftsman’s care.

To those who loved him, Mike will forever be remembered for his “heart of a servant.” He showed his love through action: mowing yards, fixing fences, hanging shelves, or simply sitting quietly with a family pet. His deep chuckle, his familiar “I’m glad you got to see me today,” and his endearing, matter of fact habit of naming each cat—Whitey, Organey, and others—will remain cherished memories. Mike taught those around him that presence is one of the greatest gifts one can offer.

Mike was a warrior, a hero, a loving husband, father, granddad, brother, and friend—the true embodiment of what it means to be a man.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jefferey Amos; his brothers, Malcolm “Butch” Amos, and Anthony Noviello; and his sister, Antonino “Nina” Noviello Barnes.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Amos of Canyon, Texas; his son Brandon Amos and wife Shelly of Amarillo, Texas; his daughter Candace Palmer and husband Jason of Parker, Texas; and his son Trent Amos of Canyon, Texas. He is also survived by his sisters, Beverly Negri of Dallas, Texas, and Billie “Muggins” Harp of Kenton, Ohio; along with ten grandchildren, Eric Amos, Khourey Amos, Kirstyn Russell, Kuyler Robinson, Kaitlyn Amos-Hall, Nathan Palmer, Ashley Amos, Bennett Amos, Kynder Rynn Amos, Kynedi Amos; and thirteen great grandchildren.
