In Loving Memory of Michael C. Smith September 5, 1961 – May 11, 2025
Derby, KSWith heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael C. Smith, 63, on May 11, 2025. Born in Wichita, Kansas, to Vernon and Anita Smith, Mike was the kind of man whose love radiated far beyond his family - he truly never met a stranger. To know him was to be considered family.
Mike had a heart as big as the Kansas sky - generous, kind, and fiercely loyal. He would give the shirt off his back to someone in need and go out of his way, without hesitation, to help anyone, whether it was a friend, a neighbor, or someone he'd just met. His warm, unmistakable laugh and welcoming spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path.
He spent 35 years working as a framer, a trade that not only supported his family but reflected the foundation of who he was: strong, dependable, and built to hold up the people around him. His work ethic was unmatched, and even after a long day, he always made time for the people he loved.
Family was everything to Mike - and that included more than just blood. His friends were family, and his love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was the heartbeat of his life. He loved to barbecue in the backyard, beer in hand, music playing, and surrounded by the laughter of those he cherished most. He was a proud supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs and OU football, and he never missed a game if he could help it.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Anita Smith, and his sister, Janis Sanders.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 37 years, Julie Smith; daughters Andrea (Brian) Vitale and Brandi (Keven) Pappan; his loyal four-legged best friend and "favorite child," Chewy; grandchildren Courtnie Sanders, Britnie (Joseph Polk) McDoniel, and Lakyn Pappan; great-grandchildren Brooklynn Hallacy, Bryleigh Razey, Logan Razey, Wade Polk, Remi Miller, and Salem Polk. He also leaves behind siblings Yvonne Cather and Johnnie Smith, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him deeply.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 25th at the Hubbard Arts Center in
Derby, Kansas from 2-6 pm. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, laugh, cry, and honor a man who left this world better than he found it - simply by being in it.
Mike will be missed more than words can say, but his legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter will live on through everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
