Mike Manes, age 69, of Amarillo, Texas, died Wednesday, December 11, 2024 in Amarillo. He was born June 24, 1955 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Ken and Myra Mae (King) Manes. He married Cathy Neel in Amarillo on August 15, 1992.
Mike grew up an oil brat. Over his lifetime, he lived in ten cities and three states: Oklahoma, California, and Texas. After high school, Mike began a career in the printing industry at Texas Printing where he printed Texas Monthly and Time Magazine. His career took him all across the state, eventually settling in Amarillo in 1990. Mike was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, and swimming in any body of water he came across-especially in the Texas hill country. While he loved to adventure, Mike's greatest love was for his family.
In June of 1991, Mike met Cathy. They married and started their family. In 1993, came Abby followed by Bethany in 1996. In search of the "job of a lifetime", Mike found a family and a life of faith. Mike's best qualities were his love for people and his heart for service. Mike had a way of seeing people that needed a kind touch the most and bringing them into his life and his family. He led boy scout troops, was a youth sponsor in the Episcopal church, was active in his recovery community, and served in his local church.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Pat Manes and two nieces, Michelle Elder and Julia Elder.
Mike is survived by his wife, Cathy; his two daughters, Abby Manes of Lubbock, Texas and Bethany Prado and her husband, Jacob of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Karen Beda of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Liz Elder of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a brother, John Manes of Ft. Worth, Texas; an uncle, Jack Manes of Denton, Texas; and eight grandchildren, Hunter, Ryleigh, Sam, Aiden, Kodi, James, Everleigh and Marie; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY, 10016, the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD, 21741 or St. Stephen Church, 4600 S. Western Street, Amarillo, Texas, 79109
