Mike Tuning

Merl 'Mike' Tuning was born in Caldwell, Idaho, to Severn and Dale Tuning on February 26, 1938. He grew up in Greenleaf and graduated from Greenleaf Friends Academy in 1956. He married Virginia Combs, on June 2, 1957. The life they built together was full of adventure. They raised three children: Laura, Carol, and Michael.
Mike had a gift for working with his hands. This talent led him to establish a successful stainless steel metal fabrication business in Greenleaf, Mikes Metal Fab. He loved and collected rare tractors building a large collection. Mike and Virginia poured their love for their community into the annual Greenleaf Tractor Pull, an event that drew hundreds of people to Greenleaf, raising funds for Greenleaf Friends Academy. Through the years they were also able to sponsor many children to attend Greenleaf Friends Academy.
Mike loved the outdoors finding freedom and adventure in the Owyhees. His hobbies included riding horses, hunting, and fishing with family and friends. He loved long drives, teasing, and a good meal.
He lived through a serious four-wheeler accident at the age of 60, showcasing his resilient spirit as he navigated through years of recovery. Later in life, when Virginia became ill with cancer, he moved into Karcher Estates. We are grateful for the loving care of staff and residents.
Mike is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia; his daughters, Laura (Brad) and Carol (Terry); five grandchildren, Jenny (Rob), Buddy (Tessa), David (Tracy), Nicole (Jeremiah), and Angela (Jacob); and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Tuning. He is preceded in death by his son Michael, his sister Geraldine Stephan, and his parents Severn and Dale.
