Mr. Millard Fillmore "Skip" Learned, Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, in Providence, Rhode Island, just one day after celebrating his 70th birthday. Born on August 13, 1955, in Abington, Massachusetts, Skip lived a life marked by dedication to his craft, devotion to his faith, and deep love for his family and community.
Skip's early years were shaped by a strong work ethic and a passion for craftsmanship. He attended the North Bennet Street School in Boston, where he honed his skills as a finish carpenter. His career took him to Colorado for several years, where he worked as a carpenter and developed a lifelong devotion to the Denver Broncos NFL team.
Later returning to New England, Skip pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. While at Roger Williams University, he served as the Associate Director of Facilities Management and played an instrumental role in overseeing the construction of the Architecture and Law School buildings on campus-projects that reflected both his professional expertise and commitment to excellence.
Following his time at the university, Skip became the Director of Facilities for the Barrington Public Schools. Over more than two decades of service, he was not only a respected leader but also a trusted colleague and friend to many. His tenure included ushering in the new Barrington Middle School-an achievement that stands as a testament to his dedication to providing high quality learning environments for students, staff and families.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Skip was deeply involved in spiritual practice as a Nichiren Buddhist for fifty years. He served as the SGI RI Chapter Men's Division Leader and worked tirelessly toward Kosen-rufu-the realization of happiness and world peace through individual transformation. His dedication to this path was unwavering and inspired those around him. Skip embraced life with energy and joy.
He was known for his warmth and kindness, often described as the life of the party. Whether playing tennis regularly at Tennis RI in East Providence, golfing with friends, working out at the gym, or enjoying card games, Skip brought enthusiasm and camaraderie wherever he went.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his wife Tracey Learned; daughter Julia Alden and her husband Cody Alden; granddaughter Amaia Elizabeth Alden; son Ian Learned; stepdaughter Abigail Almeida; former wife and dear friend Elizabeth (Betsy) Learned; sisters Kathleen O'Connell (and her husband Paul) of New Hampshire; Francine Eithier of Massachusetts; Michelle Morgan of California. Skip was predeceased by his mother Mabel Marley; father Millard Fillmore Learned Sr.; stepfather Michael Marley; brothers Robert Batson, James Batson, Thomas Batson; and sister Constance Graves.
