Charlotte T. Garlough, age 96, passed away March 29, 2024 at Freedom Village in Holland, Michigan.
Charlotte was born June 15, 1927 in Seattle, Washington to William Max Tanzer and Miriam Sherman Tanzer. In 1934, Charlotte and her mother moved to their Potsdam, NY family-owned farm built in 1803. It was there that she was raised with her siblings Sally and George Anderson. She met her future husband, William Glenn Garlough, while he was serving during WWII in the Marine Corps. They were married June 15, 1947.
Charlotte graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 1947 earning a B.S. Degree with a Major in Elementary Education. After a short teaching career and Bill's graduation from Clarkson University in Potsdam, they moved to Watertown, New York where they raised their three children; Jennifer Lee, William Charles and Robert Bruce. When their children were in high school, Bill took a corporate job which led to frequent transfers around the US.
Charlotte led an active life pursuing her interests in watercolor painting, singing, bridge, photography, genealogy and gourmet cooking. For 14 years she volunteered as a Presbyterian Lay Chaplain. Upon her daughter Jenny's declining health, she frequently assisted her daughter and family in East Aurora, NY. She also supported husband Bill in his home-based consulting business.
In 2004, Charlotte and Bill moved to Freedom Village in Holland, Michigan where they enjoyed a full lifestyle with many friends and activities including bridge, Freedom Village hosted trips and Hope College events. They assisted several Freedom Village committees. A music lover, Charlotte enjoyed singing in the Freedom Village Choir.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, daughter Jennifer Evereth and her brother George Anderson. She is survived by her children William and Karen (Mangold) Garlough, Robert and Elsy (Sarkis) Garlough, grandchildren Jonathan and Hannah (Griffin) Garlough, Katherine Evereth, Jeremy and Elizabeth (Reick) Garlough, Kristen Garlough and husband Chris Haugh, nine great grandchildren, her sister Sally Tupper Sherman Dingsöyr of Potsdam, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held May 3 at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at Freedom Village in Holland with Reverend James Neevel officiating. The family suggests memorials may be given to the Freedom Village Scholarship Fund or the Third Reformed Church in Holland.
