Mrs. Mona L. (Schanding) Crabtree, age 68, of Vanceburg, Kentucky, formerly of Vevay and Madison, Indiana entered this life on May 17, 1956 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. She was the loving daughter of William Paul Schanding, whom preceded her in death and Mable Bernice (Turner) Schanding. She was raised in Cynthiana, Kentucky until the family moved to Jefferson County, Indiana where she attended Southwestern High School and graduated in 1974 from Madison Consolidated High School. Mona was raised in the Church of the Nazarene in Madison, Indiana. She received her bachelor's degree in journalism and business administration from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Mona was united in marriage to Thomas Stevens "Steve" Crabtree, II. in 1979 at the Church of the Nazarene in Madison, Indiana. This happy union was blessed with a son, Eric. Mona was employed as corporation secretary for the Switzerland County School Corporation for 32 years. She enjoyed socializing with her friends, boating and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved feeding the birds, gardening and listening to music. Mona passed away at 10:20 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville, Kentucky.
Mona will be missed by deeply missed by her husband, Thomas Stevens "Steve" Crabtree II. of Vanceburg, KY; her son, Eric Crabtree and his wife, Lindsey of Lexington, KY; her grandchildren, Abigail and Harrison Crabtree of Lexington, KY; her mother, Mable Bernice (Turner) Schanding of Madison, IN; her brother, Paul Douglas "Doug" Schanding and his wife, Becky of Saint Simons Island, GA; her sister, Karen Lewellyn and her husband, Doug of Madison, IN; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gene and Donna Crabtree of Pleasant, IN; her nieces and nephews, Sarah Lewellyn and her companion, Kris Mott, Paul Schanding, Lauren Schanding, Tommy Crabtree and his companion, Megan Singleton and James Crabtree and his wife, Shelby Romans; her several great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Paul Schanding, died November 21, 2018, her paternal-grandparents, Thomas William and Zelphia (Mane) Schanding; her maternal-grandparents, Millard and Mae (Dunham) Turner and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas Stevens "Tom" and Theresa Ann (Smith) Crabtree.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
A Celebration of Mona's Life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2025, by Rev. Mike Jones, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville, Kentucky or Crabtree Family Endowment Fund for Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
