Mowton "Tony" LeCompte Waring Jr., Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), 90, died July 6, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mowton LeCompte Waring, Sr. and Sarah Chase Waring and his wife of 57 years, Constance Croke Waring. He is survived by his daughter, Carroll Waring Reed; and sons, Colonel, U.S Army (Ret) James Mowton Waring, Major, U.S. Army (Ret) Matthew LeCompte Waring and Anthony LeCompte Waring; their spouses, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Colonel Waring was born in New York, City on 1 October 1934 and grew up in Ardsley-on-Hudson, NY. He attended the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), in Lexington, VA with the class of 1956. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor in the U.S. Army in 1957. He later earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama and attended the U.S. Air Force Air War College.
In 30 years of active-duty military service with the U.S. Army, he travelled the world with his wife Connie and their four children re-locating numerous times. A highly decorated Vietnam veteran, he distinguished himself in combat and was decorated for valor earning the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor along with the highly coveted Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). Colonel Waring served multiple tours in Germany as a Tank Battalion Commander and later as an Area Support Group (Garrison) Commander. Additionally, during his diverse Army career, he served as an Instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School, on the Army Staff, the Joint Staff, the Armor Center Staff and as Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactical Officer at VMI.
After retirement, Colonel Waring and his wife Connie re-located to the Northern Neck of Virginia where he became actively involved in the community, including, the Historic Christ Church, serving as a docent and President of the Historic Foundation, multiple roles at Grace Episcopal Church, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Lions Club. He played a role in the establishment of Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury (RWC). He was also a former Chapter President of the VMI Alumni Association and active with Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).
A Funeral Service will be held at Historic Christ Church, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems VA 22576 at 11:00 AM, 3 September 2025.
