Ms. Nancy Sumerford Carlan

Ms. Nancy Sumerford Carlan, 101, passed peacefully away at Perfect Care surrounded by her compassionate and dedicated caregivers, on Thursday August 15, 2024. A Celebration of Life will be held at DeSoto Church on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at the DeSoto City Cemetery.
Ms. Nancy was born on October 20, 1922 in DeSoto, Georgia to the late Lawrence Cobb Sumerford and Clustie Barr Sumerford. She graduated Valedictorian of Union Highschool in Leslie, Ga. She was also a graduate of the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia. Nancy worked with her husband on the family farm DeSoto. She also helped manage the business they owned; one being the DeSoto Confectionary and Nut Company. She was an active member of First Methodist Church of Americus.
Ms. Nancy began retirement with new friends, a passion for bridge and more time to travel and visit family and her friends. She had an active church life at First Methodist Church and served as president of the UMW. She had an avid love of the UGA "Bull dawgs" and the Atlanta Braves.
Nancy remained strong, self-reliant and independent into her late 90's when her health started to decline.
Her strong faith in God's unfailing love and faithfulness grew stronger through a life of joys, trials, struggles, changes and endless praises.
Ms. Nancy is survived by her three children; Kitty Carlan Fricks (Roy) of Valdosta, Ga, Arthur Carlan Jr. (Paula) of Tallahassee, FL, William Carlan (Susan) of Monroe, GA. Along with six grandchildren, Arthur Carlan III (Becky) of Tallahassee, FL, Sidney Carlan Smith (Dan) of Acworth, GA, Hannah Carlan (Sumeet Nagi) of San Leandro, CA, William Fricks of Valdosta, GA, Jake Carlan (Sam) of Lawrencville, GA and Christopher Fricks (Jodie) of Valdosta, GA. She also survived by 10 great grandchildren, who called her "Great Gran".
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Arthur Buell Carlan Sr.
