Nancy was a significant presence in my childhood and young adulthood. As my next-door neighbor, she was a constant presence. When I think of Nancy, I think about how she made me feel. The words that come to mind are safe, encouraged, seen and heard.
Nancy was a source of unwavering encouragement. She used to tell me that I could do or be anything I wanted. Now keep in mind...I was not showing that "promise" to the world...but she saw it! I remember so clearly how she spoke to me, not as a child, but as an equal, genuinely interested in my thoughts and opinions. She even insisted I call her Nancy, which felt quite rebellious in the 80s!
Nancy was one of those special neighbors who helped raise the kids in our community. She could scold me when I needed it, and then offer a comforting hug. I cherish those memories of a time when neighbors were "deputized parents" and this village of people really took part in raising us neighborhood kids.
Though we lost touch after I moved away, Nancy always held a special place in my heart. As I reflect on Nancy and how our lives intertwined over a 20-year period, her influence on my life is profound. Rest in peace, Nancy. Thank you for everything.
